About Bionic Technology

Bionic Technology by Össur is a powerful technological platform to create intelligent devices that behave like human limbs. It draws from the knowledge and experience of wide-ranging contributing disciplines, such as mechanical, software and electronic engineers, top clinical professionals and industrial designers. Launched in 2004, this platform remains amazing and unique and has been changing people's lives for the better.

Artificial Intelligence (AI)

A well-established yet constantly evolving branch of computer science, AI deals with intelligent behavior, learning and adaptation in machines. Bionic Technology by Össur incorporates AI to increase the functionality of products that are designed to help reduce mental and physical effort, as well as the consequential strain to other parts of the body following an amputation. AI enhances the safety of the device, and therefore of the user, and helps to stimulate voluntary control of the prosthetic limb. The outcome is a more adaptive system and more carefree mobility.

Power Motion

For many years the prosthetics profession was recognized primarily for its ability to replace the basic structural elements of limbs following amputation, but now the capacity to restore lost muscle function is literally lifting amputees to a higher level. From the subtle elevation of the toe during swing phase, to the powerful knee extension required for foot-over-foot stair climbing, power motion allows for previously unknown levels of functionality and user-safety. The most obvious advantage of devices incorporating power motion, is reducing strain on the residual limb and protecting the body from the repercussions of muscular compensation.

This trio of functions summarizes the process as performed by all products in Össur's Bionic line, whether it be knees or feet. First, sophisticated sensors sample different aspects of real-time motion, often faster even than the human sensory system. Then, Össur's patented forms of artificial intelligence continuously think through data from the sensors, analyzing and calculating the best move to make. Finally, precision components act immediately to deliver the best possible function as instructed by the stream of signals sent from the artificial intelligence.
